Fantasy Fallout: Week 5’s Injury Openings and Role Resets
Add Woody Marks for conditional RB depth; hold Montgomery, Henderson and Hockenson through medical updates. Harrison's reported move to Houston changes the target questions.

Coverage through Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, 11:24 PM CT: The Sunday slate is final, including Baltimore's 30–23 overtime win at Atlanta; Bills–Rams is Monday. These are Week 6 and rest-of-season roster decisions, not retroactive Week 5 starts. No player-specific injury grade or return date is established here.
What changed: one add, several checkpoints
ADD Woody Marks for running-back depth if you have a replaceable bench spot. David Montgomery left Houston's game with a groin injury, and coach DeMeco Ryans said the team is evaluating him. Marks is the most useful direct contingency, but a larger opportunity if Montgomery misses time is not proof of every-down, passing-down or goal-line control. HOLD Montgomery until the medical update; check Marks's full role before paying a starter's waiver price.
HOLD TreVeyon Henderson after his ankle exit and HOLD T.J. Hockenson through concussion protocol. Rhamondre Stevenson and Gavin Bartholomew are conditional beneficiaries, with very different ceilings and evidence. Philadelphia also lost Will Shipley to a foot injury while Saquon Barkley was inactive and Tank Bigsby was on injured reserve. Dameon Pierce is a deep contingency, not a backfield coronation. Your waiver budget deserves a medical report before it buys a crown.
SNF closeout: Michael Penix Jr. left late with a ribs injury and Tua Tagovailoa replaced him. HOLD Penix where rostered and arrange healthy quarterback cover. Tagovailoa is a conditional bench add in two-QB or superflex formats if Penix's availability remains unresolved; he is not an automatic one-QB start. HOLD Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson without assuming a target transfer, point discount or extra rushing volume. Atlanta's next medical and practice reports must settle availability; even an active Penix would still need a separate check of throwing workload and effectiveness.
| Player / format | Next move | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Woody Marks · RB-needy redraft | ADD for depth; conditional larger role | David Montgomery evaluation; Houston passing-down and goal-line use |
| David Montgomery · all redraft | HOLD; arrange healthy cover | Groin update, practice, and function if active |
| TreVeyon Henderson · all redraft | HOLD; protect Rhamondre Stevenson | Ankle status and two-back role after return |
| T.J. Hockenson · all redraft | HOLD; find TE cover | Protocol progress and post-clearance routes |
| Michael Penix Jr. · QB / superflex | HOLD; arrange QB cover. MONITOR Tua Tagovailoa in two-QB/superflex | Atlanta medical/practice update, starter decision, and passing function if active |
Winners, with the conditions attached
Woody Marks has the clearest immediate waiver case because Montgomery's injury created an actual opening. Isaiah Likely is a more durable hold or tight-end lineup candidate than a two-touchdown box score alone suggests: the Giants credited him with 11 catches for 94 yards Sunday and 33 receptions through five games. Jameis Winston attempted 54 passes in the tie, so another identical volume game is not a baseline.
Mike Evans had a strong receiving day as San Francisco lost Deebo Samuel Sr.; keep an established option in lineups, but wait for routes before awarding all future targets. Kyle Williams is a speculative receiver-depth add and Efton Chism III a deeper PPR monitor after New England's distributed passing production. Drake Maye remains a hold; his five total touchdowns do not certify a single new receiver hierarchy. Missing receivers can open routes without handing one teammate every target.
Ollie Gordon II produced with De’Von Achane unavailable; hold or add for depth where the roster cost is modest, then check Achane's return and the next carry/route split. Gavin Bartholomew caught five passes after Hockenson exited, but Minnesota's bye and concussion protocol make him a conditional deep tight-end choice, not an automatic Week 6 starter.
Losers: the easy assumptions
David Montgomery, TreVeyon Henderson, T.J. Hockenson and Will Shipley lost availability certainty. A return to participation would be welcome; it would not by itself certify normal carries, routes, contact tolerance or effectiveness. Deebo Samuel Sr. likewise needs an availability check and a separate assessment of how much acceleration and designed-touch work he handles if active.
Chase Brown is still a hold, but Samaje Perine receiving more carries and Brown's fumble make an uncontested-backfield assumption less secure. Cincinnati's bye means Perine is a speculative bench stash rather than immediate lineup relief. Philadelphia's emergency backfield looks larger on a depth chart than it did behind Sunday's depleted line. Houston's receiver target tree also becomes less certain after the reported Marvin Harrison Jr. transaction; no one inherits a neat prepackaged target share.
Injury fallout: one decision table
Confirmed statuses and reported body parts are separated from projected opportunities. A quick return, missed time and an active-but-limited return remain distinct possibilities where the team has not resolved them. The named replacements below are conditional roster options, not numerical projection transfers.
| Player | Confirmed / reported | Direct and secondary opportunity | Action and next checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| David Montgomery · HOU RB | Groin injury; ruled out. Houston is still evaluating him. No grade or return date is confirmed. | Woody Marks has the clearest direct conditional opening; Dare Ogunbowale is another rostered backfield option. Future passing-down and goal-line shares remain unconfirmed. | HOLD Montgomery; ADD Marks for RB depth where available. Check Houston's evaluation and Monday's review of Sunday's carries, routes and scoring work before calling Marks a starter. |
| TreVeyon Henderson · NE RB | Ankle injury; ruled out. Next-game availability and cutting/contact function are unknown. | Rhamondre Stevenson is the direct conditional beneficiary, with Cory Kiner deeper insurance. Will Campbell's knee exit also changes line context, not a quantified RB forecast. | HOLD Henderson; retain Stevenson and consider him where available. Check Henderson's ankle and Stevenson's knee, then actual backfield roles. |
| Will Shipley · PHI RB | Foot injury; ruled out. Saquon Barkley was inactive and Tank Bigsby was on injured reserve. | Dameon Pierce carried the emergency load, but 11 carries for 14 yards amid line disruption do not establish a valuable feature role. Carson Steele remains another contingent option. | HOLD Shipley where roster space allows; Pierce is a deep conditional bench add only. Recheck Shipley and Barkley next week, Bigsby's IR status, and the line before spending aggressively. |
| T.J. Hockenson · MIN TE | Concussion; ruled out. Protocol progress, not the next active label alone, controls availability. | Gavin Bartholomew caught five passes for 33 yards after the exit; Josh Oliver also missed this game. Hockenson's eventual route load needs its own check. | HOLD Hockenson and secure a healthy tight end. MONITOR Bartholomew as a deep conditional stream only if Hockenson remains unavailable after Minnesota's bye. |
| Kenyon Sadiq · NYJ TE | Concussion; ruled out. No clearance timetable is established. | Mason Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert are conditional tight-end alternatives; target distribution is not yet verified as a stable change. | HOLD if bench space permits; use a healthy tight end while protocol is open. Check practice and Monday’s route review before a Taylor claim. |
| KC Concepcion Jr. · CLE WR | Head injury; ruled out. A concussion diagnosis was not established in the team's report. | Isaiah Bond may see more routes, but routes alone do not prove target earning or a fantasy-ready replacement. | HOLD where rostered; MONITOR Bond only in deeper formats. Check Cleveland's diagnosis, practice and actual receiving deployment. |
| Deebo Samuel Sr. · SF WR | Hamstring injury; ruled out. Grade and next-game timetable are unknown. | Mike Evans remains an established receiving option; Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins are conditional deeper routes. Jacob Cowing's availability also needs checking. | HOLD Samuel; retain Evans in lineups where healthy. Cooks is a conditional deep add if Samuel misses time and routes support it. Check practice and Samuel's acceleration/workload after return. |
| Tre Harris · LAC WR | Hamstring injury; did not return. No severity or absence length is confirmed. | Quentin Johnston missed the game and Ladd McConkey was active but scarcely used; no emergency receiver has a verified full replacement role. | HOLD in deeper leagues; MONITOR Chargers receiver practice and routes. Do not buy a presumed target takeover. |
| Roman Wilson / Ben Skowronek · PIT WR | Wilson left with a finger injury and Skowronek with a calf injury; both were ruled out. | Germie Bernard had a larger receiving day behind DK Metcalf, with Michael Pittman Jr. already on injured reserve. The opening depends on multiple availability checks. | MONITOR Bernard as a deep conditional add. Check both injured receivers' practice and Bernard's routes/targets before elevating him. |
| Skyy Moore · GB WR / Tom Kennedy · DET WR | Moore was ruled out with an ankle injury; Kennedy was ruled out with a knee injury. | Deeper rotation work may shift, but a specific new fantasy starter has not been established. | MONITOR only in deep formats; check team practice and Monday route reports. No broad waiver claim follows yet. |
| Michael Penix Jr. · ATL QB | Left late against Baltimore with a reported ribs injury; Tua Tagovailoa replaced him. No diagnosis, absence length or Week 6 designation is confirmed. | Tagovailoa is the direct conditional quarterback replacement. HOLD Drake London and Kyle Pitts while checking their routes and targets with the actual starter; Bijan Robinson does not automatically gain carries or targets. | HOLD Penix where rostered and arrange healthy QB cover. MONITOR Tagovailoa as a conditional two-QB/superflex bench add, not an automatic one-QB start. Check Atlanta's medical update, first practice report and starting-QB decision; if Penix is active, assess throwing workload and effectiveness separately. |
New England left tackle Will Campbell also exited with a knee injury. That is context for the Patriots offense, not a measured reduction to any player's fantasy points. Other game-day injuries will remain on our next review of official injury updates and usage; we will update a decision if new evidence changes it.
Role resets beyond the injury list
Marvin Harrison Jr. was inactive for Arizona amid the reported trade to Houston. Both coaches acknowledged the move, and NFL reporting now describes the trade as agreed; a formal team transaction posting had not been verified at this cutoff. HOLD Harrison and monitor the official transaction and first Texans practices. Houston must fit him alongside Nico Collins and its existing receivers; immediate target volume and Week 6 role are open questions, not automatic upgrades.
For Arizona, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne and Trey McBride are the first names to inspect. HOLD McBride; MONITOR Wilson and Bourne through routes and targets rather than treating a vacated role as guaranteed target inheritance. Germie Bernard is a deeper Pittsburgh watch after multiple receiver exits. Samaje Perine needs another backfield observation after Cincinnati's bye before his carry edge becomes a trend.
Where ACE found the edge — and where it has not yet
ACE means Actionable Competitive Edge: make the smallest supported roster decision now and state what could reverse it. Marks merits a conditional bench add; Pierce needs more health and line evidence; Wilson and Bourne need actual Arizona target earning. Do not turn Sunday's injury exits or touchdowns into exact rank, point or FAAB changes.
The numerical Week 5 opportunity tree has not passed the required current injury/role reconciliation. These next-week and rest-of-season reads therefore remain qualitative. Monday's Opportunity Report must check team medical updates, snaps, routes, targets per route, carries, passing downs and scoring-area work, then reconcile team opportunity before any new projections. Clearance and normal productivity are separate questions.
Your next move
Add Woody Marks for affordable RB depth; hold the established injured players and prepare healthy cover, including quarterback cover for Michael Penix Jr. Monitor Marvin Harrison Jr.'s transaction and new role before trading on a target count no one has seen. Monday's medical and usage evidence should tell us which openings are real.
