Waiver Edge: Week 5
The best claim is not always the loudest Sunday score. This board prices the role, how long it can last and what could take it away.

Claim order and FAAB
| Rank | Player | Roster-rate source/date | FAAB | Why now | What can change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Emanuel Wilson · RB · SEA | 50.1% ESPN (Oct. 5); 49% early-week consensus | 8–12%; 18% only for urgent RB need | Zach Charbonnet is out Week 5 and Jadarian Price is on IR. Wilson has the clearest near-term RB opening. | Seattle signed Robert Henry Jr.; Charbonnet's return can shorten the window. |
| 2 | Keon Coleman · WR · BUF | 4.2% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 8–12%; 15% if DJ Moore misses | Seven Week 4 targets; a larger role is possible if DJ Moore's shoulder keeps him out. | Moore has no confirmed Week 5 designation; Buffalo's rotation can limit volume. |
| 3 | Will Shipley · RB · PHI | 0.6% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 6–10%; 15% only if Saquon Barkley out and RB-needy | Barkley is week to week; Tank Bigsby is expected to go on IR. Shipley has an opening. | Philadelphia may elevate another back; a feature role is not established. |
| 4 | Keaton Mitchell · RB · LAC | 18.1% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 5–8%; 10% ceiling | Ten carries and six targets in a three-back committee merit a claim. | Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal remain involved; do not assume a takeover. |
| 5 | Austin Ekeler · RB · WAS | 2.3% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 3–6%; 8% RB-needy | Low-cost bet that his early-down and receiving role can grow. | Rachaad White's return adds competition to a crowded backfield; no starter volume is certified. |
| 6 | Dohnte Meyers · WR · CIN | 0.2% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 3–5%; 8–10% if both starters out | Deeper-league contingency if Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both miss. | Neither is a confirmed inactive; missing targets do not all transfer to Meyers. |
| 7 | Malik Washington · WR · MIA | 28.3% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 2–4% | Lower-ceiling WR/FLEX fallback for a present receiver need. | The offensive environment limits confidence in a breakout. |
| 8 | Brian Robinson Jr. · RB · ATL | 30% Yahoo, secondary-reported Oct. 6 | 2–4%; 6% Bijan manager | Fourteen carries Monday and useful contingency value; do not pay for three touchdowns to repeat. | Bijan Robinson remained the lead; Brian Robinson Jr. had only four charted routes. |
| 9 | Tyler Allgeier · RB · ARI | 28.2% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 2–4%; 6% Love manager | Contingency value and modest standalone work. | Jeremiyah Love remains the starter; roster need governs this bench bid. |
| 10 | Mike Gesicki · TE · CIN | 9.6% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 1–3% | A reasonable TE-need stream if Cincinnati's receiver absences open targets. | Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins may return; opportunity is conditional. |
| 11 | Tre' Harris · WR · LAC | 5.7% ESPN (Oct. 5) | 1–3% | Ladd McConkey's foot status can create a temporary route opening. | McConkey's clearance and Quentin Johnston's role cap the upside. |
How to use the top five
1. Emanuel Wilson — the best-supported near-term opening
Emanuel Wilson has the clearest immediate running-back path because Jadarian Price is on injured reserve and coach Mike Macdonald ruled Zach Charbonnet out for Week 5. Wilson had 21 carries last week, but Seattle signed Robert Henry Jr. to its active roster Tuesday. The NFL reported that a Joe Mixon signing did not proceed. Bid for a usable Week 5 opportunity, not a promised season-long monopoly; recheck Seattle's active backs and role before Sunday.
2. Keon Coleman — better balanced-roster upside
Keon Coleman earned seven targets last week, with much of the added work coming after DJ Moore aggravated his shoulder. Moore has no confirmed Week 5 designation yet, and Buffalo used a receiver rotation before he left. Coleman is a worthwhile bench claim; call him a Week 5 starter only if the injury report and role support it. A receiver-needy roster may value his longer usable window, while a running-back-needy roster can prioritize Shipley if Barkley is ruled out.
3. Will Shipley — injury opening, not automatic feature work
Will Shipley had a Tuesday injury opening while Saquon Barkley was considered week to week and Tank Bigsby was placed on injured reserve. On Wednesday, Philadelphia signed Dameon Pierce to its active roster, adding direct competition. Shipley's observed role does not establish that he inherits every Barkley or Bigsby touch. Push toward the ceiling only if Barkley is out, the practice report and backfield rotation support him, and you truly need a running back.
4. Keaton Mitchell — claim the role, not a takeover
Keaton Mitchell drew 10 carries and six targets while Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal remained involved. That combination earns Mitchell the higher default claim than Ekeler, especially in full PPR; it does not certify a lead-back role. Keep Hampton or Vidal where their upside still matters, and wait for another workload sample before treating any Chargers back as a safe start.
5. Austin Ekeler — an inexpensive role bet
Austin Ekeler entered Washington's mix and may gain early-down or receiving work, but reliable starting volume is not yet established. Keep the bid modest, particularly with Rachaad White capable of adding competition to an already crowded backfield. Ekeler is a bench speculation, not a reason to cut an established healthy starter.
Check your wire
These players exceed the normal sub-50% board or carry a timing complication. Their availability is league-specific, so verify before planning your claim.
| Player | ESPN rostered (Oct. 5) | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Zach Charbonnet · RB · SEA | 58.0% ESPN | Add for longer-term upside if you can wait; Seattle has ruled him out for Week 5. |
| T.J. Hockenson · TE · MIN | 54.7% ESPN (Oct. 5) | Check the individual wire if you need a tight end; do not assume last week's targets recur. |
| KC Concepcion · WR · CLE | 50.8% ESPN | Seventeen targets over two weeks and full-time routes. This is a value check, not a universal availability claim. |
| Romeo Doubs · WR · NE | 58.4% ESPN | Nine targets with Mack Hollins injured; A.J. Brown's possible Week 6 return limits the window. |
Deep-league and fallback bids
| Player | ESPN rostered (Oct. 5) | FAAB | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efton Chism III · WR · NE | 0.1% | $1–2 | Took Hollins' role after the calf injury; deeper leagues pending practice. |
| Jaylin Noel · WR · HOU | 4.8% | $1–2 | Clear top-three receiver usage for one game; require a repeat before starting. |
| Tez Johnson · WR · TB | 0.1% ESPN (Oct. 5) | $1 | Tampa Bay plays Dallas Thursday; the short week makes his role a near-term watch, not a bye stash. |
| Jalen Royals · WR · KC | 0.1% | $1 | Replaced Rashee Rice, but Tyquan Thornton's injury and the Week 5 bye give Kansas City time to add a veteran. |
| Darius Cooper · WR · PHI | 0.2% | $1 | Seven targets and two touchdowns with DeVonta Smith out; touchdown-driven and temporary. |
Quarterbacks, tight ends and defenses
Kirk Cousins (16.9% ESPN on the Oct. 5 snapshot) is a 1QB stream and can carry greater priority in Superflex, where the local quarterback supply matters. A 3–5% 1QB bid is a starting point; do not apply a universal Superflex ceiling without checking your league. C.J. Stroud (37.2% on the same snapshot) is the alternative if available. Do not drop a usable starter merely to chase last week's quarterback points.
At tight end, Mike Gesicki is the lower-rostered conditional stream; T.J. Hockenson is the better individual-wire pickup if your league actually left him available. KC Concepcion is a Cleveland wide receiver, not a tight end, and belongs in the receiver check-your-wire group.
For D/ST, Cincinnati against Miami is the one-week stream to inspect. Chicago is the multiweek stash. Treat the Giants as conditional on Washington's actual quarterback status; Jayden Daniels is expected to practice, so do not price a third-string opponent as a settled fact.
Tuesday claim plan
Add Emanuel Wilson if you need a Week 5 running back, but check Seattle's new depth before assuming feature volume. Keon Coleman is the default receiver claim; Will Shipley can jump him on an RB-needy roster if Barkley is out and Philadelphia does not add a major competitor. Keaton Mitchell is the preferred speculative Chargers back; Austin Ekeler is cheaper committee upside. Treat Dohnte Meyers as a deeper-league contingency, not a one-for-one Chase replacement.
Monday's 45–24 Atlanta win added two useful checks, not a box-score bidding contest. Brian Robinson Jr. had 14 carries for 62 yards and three touchdowns, but RotoWire charted only 24 snaps and four routes against Bijan Robinson's continuing lead role. Bid for contingency and some rushing work, not a three-touchdown repeat. Devaughn Vele earned nine targets and ran 42 charted routes; his current platform roster rate is unresolved, so check your wire without treating him as an eligibility-certified main-board add. Alvin Kamara returned after a knee issue; do not crown a New Orleans replacement without the first practice report.
Use an expendable second D/ST, nonessential 1QB backup or low-upside bench player without a near-term role as the default drop—not an injured core starter or a useful upside back solely because one committee member had a good week. Use the next player in your position group as your fallback bid if your first claim fails. Wednesday's practice reports and transactions are the reversal checkpoints for Wilson, Coleman, Shipley and the Cincinnati and Chargers contingencies.
